UCLA Doubles Photovoltaic Efficiency of Transparent Photovoltaic Cells

UCLA researchers have doubled the photoelectric efficiency of a breakthrough transparent photovoltaic cell. The battery can be mounted on glass windows, skylights, and smart phone displays to collect the sun's energy. The new transparent photovoltaic cell uses a two-layer design that absorbs sunlight over a larger spectral range and incorporates a new layer of material to reduce energy loss.

The tandem-structured organic transparent photovoltaic cell last year had a photovoltaic efficiency of 4%, and today it has reached 7.3%. Yang Yang, the UCLA professor who led the study, said that the new battery can be used as an energy generation layer to be installed on glass or mobile phone displays without affecting the user's ability to see the screen.
